An impact on so many lives

When I joined Eastleigh Lions about 5 years ago Devan, as membership chair, was one of the first members I met, and after joining him for a coffee was taken under his wing. Always a fountain of knowledge, he introduced me to the world of Lions and its ethos. I rapidly discovered Devan’s ability to encourage you to take on an awful lot more than you had intended. Given Devan’s unswerving enthusiasm and commitment that he displayed himself, it was hard to say no.
Devan was such an integral part of the Eastleigh Lions Club that his loss will be greatly felt. He leaves behind an enormous legacy, not least of which is the Lion’s Bus which he, almost single handedly, fund raised tens of thousands of pounds to donate to Age Concern and One Community.
He fulfilled the role of Club President on three occasions and regularly stepped up to run meetings whenever current presidents were absent. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award the most prestigious accolade a Lions member can receive.
He had a strong bond of friendship with members of our twin clubs in both France and Germany and would often accommodate them and their families in his home.
He had a good sense of humour and I remember during the covid Zoom meetings he would appear with a background that made it look as though he was joining us from outer space. He would always attend those Zoom meetings for our monthly club get together, and also the Zooms we did with our German and French colleagues. Very impressive for a person of senior years. Some younger members were less capable.
In lots of ways Devan will be irreplaceable, and his loss will be felt not only by the Eastleigh Lions but by the wider volunteering community and organisations.
RIP Devan (you’ve earned it!)
